Kerry Gray took to Facebook this week to appeal to anyone who witnessed his spent brewing grain being pilfered from his Ghuznee St Brewery Choice Bros to come forward. Destined for pigs at a local farm, Gray said “It has put us a couple of hundred $ out of pocket in bins and has cost our farmer livestock feed for the rest of the week...”

What TMTB can reveal is that council workers under the instructions from deputy Mayor Paul Eagle were instructed to collect the spent grain and bring it to the council cafeteria. Eagle said he was sick of the whining from the council meeting table so took it upon himself to serve up the pig food. “It was really sad watching elected council member Nicola Young chewing her way through a cheese and marmite sandwich, no one should have to make their own lunch or see that” said Eagle.

Choice Bros’s Kerry Gray said he was more than happy to keep the council supplied with fresh spent grain if it meant they could keep up the amazing work they have been doing to keep the Wellington Craft Beer market humming. “I think there should be a building consent for spent grain policy introduced” said Gray. “Opening anything in Wellington hospitality is challenging so if this pig food can lube the consent process we are onboard.

When contacted by TMTB, other breweries were also keen to have their brewing chaff collected for councilors to get their snouts into if it meant for a better consent process.
